The name Lert Saman Tan comes from the name of Nai Lert Setthabutra or Phraya Phakdi Noraset. Originally, Mr. Lert’s father named him “Lert Man Tao” (Lert-sa-man-tao). Which means “the best above anyone” , to show the goodwill the parents had for their son. However, when he grew up, Mr. Lert dropped the word “Man Tao” and left only “Nai Lert” for ease of addressing.
Mr. Lert’s original name “Lertmantaw” has become a slang term among the older generation to refer to something or a person who is excellent or who excels in a certain area, similar to the words “Jeng” or “Suet” today.
Later, a national artist, Mr. Theing Satifueang, adapted the word “Lertmantau” into “Lertsamantan” and spread it through his works. Making this word widely known and becoming a popular word among the younger generation up until today, meaning something excellent, something superior to anything else, or anything that greatly impresses us. Which is consistent with the original meaning of the name “Lertmantau” which indicates excellence and prominence.
